For many, planning for a thru-hike is all about selecting the right gear.  For most, there is a direct relationship between enjoying the hike (and potentially completing the hike) and the weight of the pack being carried.  In fact, for many its a matter of ounces!  This section will feature gear reviews, particularly of equipment I have chosen for my thru-hike and the reasons for selecting that item over other choices.  Eventually, this section will review and describe the following items that I will use on my trek:

“Big Three”

  • Backpack
  • Tent
  • Sleep System

  • rain jacket
  • rain pants
  • “puffy” jacket
  • mid-layer
  • under-layer
  • hiking shirt(s)
  • hiking pant(s)
  • hiking socks
  • hiking shoes
  • camp shoes

  • water filtration system
  • canister stove
  • knife
  • gaiters
  • trekking poles
  • head lamp

  • iPhone/camera
  • personal locator beacon
  • battery pack/charger
